ESU Bordeaux - Irish evening

On March 21st, ESU Bx members and their friends gathered at O'Rowland's for an Irish evening...
The evening started with Professor Moya Jones who gave a talk on Ireland and the European Union. her speech was then followed by provocative questions and thoughts.
Discussion continued over a typical Irish dinner!

Our meeting place was 30 rue de Pessac, at O’Rowland’s Pub on Saturday 20th March.

Florence, the ESU Chairman in Bordeaux, welcomed participants as they arrived and were shown to the room above the bar.
We were a good mix of ages and people initially gave a few timid introductions, but after a short while everyone began chatting in smaller groups.
As a belated celebration of Saint Patrick’s Day, we came to hear a presentation about “Ireland and the European Union” given by Mrs Moya Jones, who teaches at Bordeaux University and has written numerous books about Ireland. Her talk gave a fascinating overview of Ireland’s current economic situation within the EU and highlighted the enormous changes which have gradually occurred over the past decades.
Several questions were raised at the end of Moya Jones’ presentation and this enabled some discussion of subjects that were of great interest to us all.
Later, to a background of Celtic music, we enjoyed an “Irish” meal and an informal, friendly chat with others seated around our tables.

Well done to Florence for organising this convivial evening.
Anne-Marie Shepherd-Capdemourlin.
